A vision while we drive

Angeliki Ampelogianni

for Kyle

In early October you decide to teach me what driving

feels like. The grey land rushing past us, as we disappear

into the sun, into the fields, the roads. Shyly we touch

each other like water to our lips. And I’m the sole witness

to your singing, fingers tap tapping as you’re breathing

the words of Black Hole Sun. Eyes stuck on this abandoned

road. Only us! The lucidity of the moment; this abandoned

time, free land, all this air around us and you are driving

us both past life towards infinity, as we are breathing

in and out each other’s sight. Now, today, let us disappear

from the fast life we have known, there will be no witness

to speak of our escape! Our bodies free, no longer touched

by strangers’ hands without permission! No longer touched

by eyes, fingers, smells that violate our homes. Abandoned

trees can be our shelter now! During the night, witnesses

to the reign of the stars, as a million tiny meteors are driving

towards the end of their light, but still too bright to disappear

from our eyes. I lay next to you on the brown ground, breathing

in the woods, the earth, the smell of you, sleeping, breathing

noisily as a child dreaming. In early morning, my body touched

only by some soft raindrops of care, as we slowly disappear

into each other, bodies being rewritten. Our old abandoned

scripts, food for the earth. How sweet and quiet this driving

of our limbs, how thirsty we both are! The new land witness

to the spring of bodies meeting in perfect alignment, witness

to our lovemaking under the naked sky. The trees breathing

fast around us, their leaves blushing for the way we are driving

our bodies towards collision. Touch me like I’ve never been touched

before! Oh, it is so pure, this loud quietness in this abandoned

earth! Now, this sunlight bathing us, as the stars disappear

in a veil of blue. Back in the car, we drive, the lands disappear

around us until there is nothing left! Only the sky a witness

to this engine running. Soon even this car will be abandoned,

giving way to our feet to cross this wide earth, our breathing

forming the song of our escape. Every leaf around us touched

by the mist and the light! Freckles of dust illuminated, driving

the wind forward to disappear behind clouds, as we are breathing

in the glittery sight. We the witnesses of this new life touched

by light. This, if only we abandoned our lives, as we were driving.
